How Long Does a Ceramic Coating Actually Last?
Five years. Nine years. Two years. Ceramic coating longevity can look deceptively simple when reduced to a number on a product page. In reality, the coating, installation, environment and way the vehicle is maintained all influence how long the protection continues to perform.
A ceramic coating can last years, if the system is right.
Gtechniq currently rates Crystal Serum Light for up to five years of durability. Crystal Serum Ultra carries a nine-year guarantee, while EXOv5 is designed to deliver up to around two years of hydrophobic performance.
Those numbers describe different products doing different jobs. They should not be interpreted as a promise that every coated vehicle will behave identically for the full period regardless of how it is used.
Our view: don't judge a ceramic coating purely by the largest number on the box. Preparation, installation, vehicle use and maintenance all matter, and the coating should be selected around how you actually own the car.

Premium long-term protection
CSL is Gtechniq's high-performance prosumer ceramic coating and is currently rated for up to five years of durability when correctly applied and maintained.
Up to 5 yearsProfessional flagship coating
CSU is Gtechniq's professional-only flagship coating and carries a nine-year manufacturer guarantee when installed and registered in accordance with the applicable terms.
9-year guaranteeHydrophobic top layer
EXOv5 is designed primarily for water and dirt repellency, slickness and gloss. Gtechniq currently lists its durability at approximately 18–24 months, or up to two years with proper care.
Approx. 18–24 monthsThe topcoat can fade before the base coating.
EXOv5 has a shorter published durability because it does a different job.
This is one of the most useful things to understand when a vehicle is protected with a layered system such as CSL + EXOv5 or CSU + EXOv5.
EXOv5 has a shorter published durability than Crystal Serum Light or Crystal Serum Ultra because it performs a different role. Its job is to provide extremely strong water repellency, slickness and easier cleaning at the surface.
As that hydrophobic top layer ages, you may notice water behaviour changing even though the underlying Crystal Serum coating remains present.
Both layers are new. The EXOv5 top layer gives maximum beading, slickness and easy cleaning over the Crystal Serum base.
Published Gtechniq figures shown for illustration. Real-world performance depends on preparation, installation, environment, use and maintenance. Water behaviour is illustrative.
Losing extreme water beading does not automatically mean the ceramic coating has failed.
Surface contamination, mineral deposits and an ageing hydrophobic topcoat can all reduce water behaviour. Before assuming a coating is gone, the paint should be properly cleaned and assessed.
Ceramic coating longevity is not determined by time alone.
Surface preparation
Paint needs to be properly decontaminated and prepared before the coating is installed so the product can bond to the intended surface.
Application quality
Correct product application, working conditions, removal technique and curing all influence the quality of the finished coating.
Maintenance technique
Appropriate washing is significantly kinder to a coated surface than repeated use of harsh chemicals or abrasive automatic wash systems.
What sits on the paint
Bird and bat droppings, insects, tree sap, mineral deposits and road grime should still be removed rather than left on the vehicle indefinitely.
Where the vehicle lives
A vehicle parked outdoors every day faces different environmental exposure from one stored under cover, even when both have the same coating.
How the car is driven
Mileage, road conditions, weather exposure and how frequently the vehicle is cleaned all influence what the coating is exposed to over its life.
This is how a coating earns its numbers.
Covered parking, safe washing and prompt cleaning give the coating the easiest possible life.
Flip each one to see how ownership habits push a coating's useful life one way or the other. An illustration, not a prediction in years.
Our environment can be hard on exterior surfaces.
Ceramic coatings here deal with more than simply sunshine.
UV exposure, coastal contamination, insects, bird and bat droppings, tree fallout, rain and mineral spotting can all accumulate on vehicle surfaces.
Ceramic coating gives the paint a much more resistant and easier-to-clean surface, but it does not remove the need to wash the vehicle.
A ceramic coating is protection, not invisibility. Contamination should still be removed promptly and the vehicle should still receive regular, safe maintenance washes.
Maintenance does not need to be complicated.
Keep the surface clean and treat it properly.
- ✓Wash the vehicle regularly using a safe wash process.
- ✓Remove bird droppings, bugs and other aggressive contamination promptly.
- ✓Use products suitable for coated surfaces.
- ✓Dry the vehicle rather than allowing mineral-rich water to repeatedly dry on the paint.
- ✓Have the coating assessed if water behaviour or cleaning performance changes significantly.
Treating ceramic coating as maintenance-free paint.
- ✕Leaving contamination sitting on the vehicle for extended periods.
- ✕Frequent use of abrasive brush-style automatic car washes.
- ✕Assuming poor water beading automatically means the coating has disappeared.
- ✕Aggressively polishing the surface without understanding that polishing can remove coating.
- ✕Waiting years before ever having the protection inspected.
Does a longer guarantee automatically mean you need CSU?
Not necessarily.
Crystal Serum Ultra is Gtechniq's flagship professional coating and provides higher chemical and swirl resistance alongside its nine-year guarantee.
Crystal Serum Light still offers up to five years of durability and is already a serious long-term ceramic coating for many vehicles.
How long you plan to keep the car, how it is used and the level of protection you want are more useful decision points than simply choosing whichever product has the largest year figure.
We care more about how it performs than the number on the invoice.
Ceramic coating longevity should not be treated as a countdown timer.
A coating can still be providing meaningful surface protection even if its water behaviour has changed, particularly when a shorter-lived hydrophobic layer has been installed over a long-term base coating.
Conversely, a neglected surface can look and behave poorly even though the underlying coating has not simply vanished.
The correct way to judge the system is through its condition, maintenance history and how the surface is actually performing.

Ceramic coating longevity FAQs.
How long does a ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is currently rated for up to five years of durability, while Crystal Serum Ultra carries a nine-year guarantee. Actual performance also depends on installation, use, environment and maintenance.
How long does EXOv5 last?
Gtechniq currently rates EXOv5 at approximately 18–24 months of durability, or up to around two years with proper care. It is primarily designed as a highly hydrophobic surface layer.
Does ceramic coating disappear when water stops beading?
Not necessarily. Surface contamination and an ageing hydrophobic topcoat can reduce water behaviour while the underlying ceramic base coating remains present. The surface should be properly cleaned and assessed before assuming the coating has failed.
Can you reapply EXOv5 over an existing ceramic coating?
A compatible hydrophobic layer can be reapplied after the surface has been properly assessed and prepared. The condition of the existing coating should be checked first rather than automatically adding product over contamination or deposits.
Does washing a ceramic-coated car remove the coating?
Normal safe washing should not remove a correctly applied ceramic coating. Abrasive polishing, inappropriate chemical use and harsh mechanical washing can shorten the useful life of the protection.
Is a nine-year coating automatically better for every car?
No. Crystal Serum Ultra is Gtechniq's higher-performance professional coating, but Crystal Serum Light may still be the more appropriate protection for many owners. Vehicle use, ownership period, condition and expectations should determine the specification.
