Gtechniq CSL vs Crystal Serum Ultra
Both are serious ceramic coatings. They are not, however, the same product with a different warranty. Here is what actually separates Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light from Crystal Serum Ultra, who each coating suits, and where professional preparation matters more than the name on the bottle.
CSL is excellent. CSU is the flagship.
Crystal Serum Light is a high-performance ceramic coating offering up to five years of durability. Crystal Serum Ultra is Gtechniq's professional-only flagship coating, backed by a nine-year guarantee and engineered for greater chemical and swirl resistance.
For many owners, CSL is already more protection than they have ever had on a vehicle. CSU becomes compelling when the car is higher-value, intended to be kept long term, subjected to regular use, or when the owner simply wants the highest level of paint coating available within the Gtechniq system.
Our view: choose the coating based on how you own the car, not just the number of years printed beside it. The quality of the paint preparation, correction and application has a huge influence on the result you actually see every day.
Crystal Serum Light vs Crystal Serum Ultra.
- DurabilityUp to 5 years
- ApplicationProsumer / professional
- StructureSingle coating layer
- Best suited toDaily drivers & value-focused protection
CSL gives strong gloss, chemical resistance and protection against environmental contamination, while remaining more forgiving than Ultra during installation.
10h does not mean your paint becomes scratch-proof.
Harder coating. Not armour.
Ceramic coating hardness is often marketed badly. CSU's harder surface increases resistance to light wash-induced swirling and chemical attack, but no ceramic coating makes paint immune to scratches, stone chips, poor washing or physical impact.
If impact protection is the priority, paint protection film is the more appropriate product. Ceramic coating and PPF solve different problems, and on higher-value vehicles we often use them together.
It comes down to ownership, use and expectations.
You want serious protection without jumping straight to the flagship coating.

The balance will lean toward the coating that fits how you own the car.
The step up to the flagship is $399 for this size.
What about EXOv5?
EXOv5 is often layered over CSL or CSU to add another characteristic owners immediately notice: excellent water and dirt repellency. Think of Serum as the durable foundation and EXO as the highly hydrophobic top layer. The combination can make washing and drying noticeably easier.
The coating is only the final stage.
A premium coating will not hide poor paint. It will preserve it.
A premium coating will not hide poor paint. In many cases it will preserve exactly what is underneath it.
Before coating, we assess the condition of the paint and prepare the surface appropriately. On a new vehicle this may be relatively light. On an older, poorly maintained or previously detailed vehicle, correction may be considerably more involved.
Clean paint properly
Safe wash, chemical decontamination and mechanical decontamination where required.
Refine the finish
Machine correction is tailored to the condition and thickness of the paint rather than using a one-size-fits-all process.
Apply the coating
Only once the finish is where we want it do we install the selected Gtechniq coating system.
Why this matters on the Sunshine Coast
Strong UV exposure, coastal contamination, rain, insects, bird and bat droppings, tree fallout and regular daily driving can all be hard on automotive paint. A ceramic coating reduces how readily many contaminants bond to the surface and makes correct maintenance substantially easier, but regular washing still matters.
Do not compare ceramic coatings on the bottle alone.
Same coating. Very different amounts of work.
The coating itself is only one component of a professional ceramic package. The condition of the vehicle, required correction, preparation time, coating selection and any protection added to glass, wheels or interior surfaces all affect the final price.
That is why two vehicles receiving the same ceramic coating may require very different levels of work before the coating is ever opened.
Our recommendation is based on the car.
We would rather recommend the right system than the most expensive one.
There are vehicles where CSL is the sensible choice and vehicles where CSU is worth the upgrade. We would rather recommend the right system than automatically push every owner to the most expensive coating.
A well-prepared vehicle protected with CSL can look exceptional and be far easier to maintain. CSU gives us another level when longevity, chemical resistance and swirl resistance are the priority. For owners wanting the most complete surface behaviour, either system can also be paired with EXOv5.

CSL vs CSU FAQs.
Is Crystal Serum Ultra better than Crystal Serum Light?
CSU is Gtechniq's higher-performance professional coating, with greater chemical and swirl resistance and a nine-year guarantee. That does not mean CSL is a poor choice. CSL offers up to five years of durability and is an excellent option for many daily-driven vehicles.
Does Crystal Serum Ultra stop scratches?
No ceramic coating makes paint scratch-proof. CSU improves resistance to light wash-induced swirling and surface marring, but physical scratches and stone impacts can still damage the paint. PPF is the product designed for impact protection.
Can EXOv5 be applied over CSL and CSU?
Yes. Gtechniq allows EXOv5 to be used over both coatings. It is commonly chosen to add strong hydrophobic behaviour, water repellency and easier cleaning.
Does a new car need paint correction before ceramic coating?
Not always to the same degree, but every new vehicle should still be inspected and properly prepared. New cars can arrive with transport marks, dealership wash damage, light swirling, sanding marks or other defects that are best addressed before they are sealed beneath a long-term coating.
Which coating does Quantum Detail recommend?
We recommend based on the vehicle, how long you plan to keep it, its use, condition and the level of protection you actually want. CSL is a strong premium choice; CSU is the flagship option for owners wanting the highest level of Gtechniq ceramic paint protection.
How much more does Crystal Serum Ultra cost than CSL?
At Quantum Detail, CSL Correct & Coat starts from $1,499 and CSU Correct & Coat from $1,898 for a sedan, hatch or coupe, with both including paint correction. Larger vehicles are priced by size, and the final scope depends on the condition of the paint.
