The Number On The Box Isn't The Whole Story
Every ceramic coating comes with a headline longevity figure. Crystal Serum Light is rated for up to five years. Crystal Serum Ultra is rated for up to nine. These numbers are genuine, published by Gtechniq, and achievable — but they represent the coating's potential lifespan under proper conditions, not a guarantee that applies regardless of how the car is used or cared for.
Real-world longevity depends on a combination of factors: how the vehicle is driven and stored, the quality of the original application, how the paint was prepared beforehand, and the washing routine the car goes through for the life of the coating. Two identical cars with the same coating can have meaningfully different outcomes depending entirely on these variables.
A coating kept in a covered garage and washed regularly with proper technique can genuinely reach the top of its rated lifespan. The same coating left outdoors, washed infrequently, or run through harsh automatic car washes will fall well short — this isn't a flaw in the product, it's simply how any protective coating behaves under different conditions.

EXOv5 Doesn't Last As Long As Your Base Coat
This is a genuinely useful detail that doesn't get talked about enough. If you've added EXOv5 as a finishing layer over CSL or CSU, it has a meaningfully shorter service life than the base coating underneath it — typically 18 to 24 months against the base coating's 5 to 9 year rating.
That doesn't mean your protection disappears after two years. The base coating is still doing the heavy lifting for chemical resistance and UV protection. What fades is the extra layer of gloss and slickness EXOv5 adds on top. A fresh topcoat can be reapplied over the existing base coating without needing to redo the whole job, which is worth factoring into your maintenance plan if you've gone with the EXOv5 upgrade.
