A common misconception is that a ceramic coating means you never have to wash your car. That's not true. What a coating does is make washing easier, reduce how often you need to do it, and protect the paint during and between washes. It doesn't make dirt disappear.

Proper maintenance for a coated car comes down to three things — washing correctly, avoiding what degrades the coating, and periodic top-up treatments to maintain performance. Get these right and your coating will perform for its full rated lifespan. Get them wrong and you'll degrade it significantly faster.

Washing Correctly

The Right Way to Wash a Coated Car

  Pre-rinse thoroughly

  Rinse the car completely before touching it. This removes loose dirt and reduces the risk of scratching during the wash.

  Use a pH neutral shampoo

  Alkaline or acidic shampoos will break down the coating over time. Use a dedicated pH neutral car shampoo, not dish soap or household cleaners.

  Two bucket method

  One bucket of shampoo solution, one bucket of clean rinse water. Rinse your wash mitt in the clean bucket before reloading with suds. This prevents dirt from being dragged back across the paint.

  Microfibre mitt only

  Use a high-quality microfibre wash mitt. Sponges and cheap mitts trap grit against the surface and introduce scratches.

  Dry with a clean microfibre towel

  Don't let the car air dry, water spots will form, especially in Queensland heat. Use a clean, plush microfibre drying towel and blot rather than drag.
