Before anything else, the legal side needs to be right, and it catches more people out than you'd expect. Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads sets clear VLT (Visible Light Transmission) limits, and getting tinted outside them means a genuine risk of a defect notice and fine.

The Detail Most People Miss
Your Factory Glass Already Has Tint
This is the single most important thing to understand before booking tint, and it's exactly where cheap or DIY jobs go wrong. Queensland's legal limit applies to the combined VLT of your factory glass plus any film added on top — not the film's rating in isolation.
Most factory glass already sits somewhere around 70 to 90% VLT on its own. If an installer applies a "35% film" without accounting for that existing factory tint, the combined result can easily drop below the legal 35% minimum — meaning a technically "legal" film can still leave you with an illegal result once it's actually on the car. A properly measured, professional install accounts for your specific glass before selecting the film, not after.
Queensland Police have increased roadside tint enforcement using tint-measuring devices since October 2025. This isn't a rare inspection anymore — it's an active, current enforcement focus, which makes getting the combined VLT right from the start more important than it's ever been.
Windscreen Rules
What You Can and Can't Do Up Front
You cannot legally tint the main viewing area of your windscreen in Queensland — full stop. What you can do is a visor strip across the very top, limited to the top 10% of the glass or above the wiper sweep, whichever is less. This is genuinely effective for cutting late-afternoon glare without compromising night visibility through the main screen.
Clear, non-tinted UV and heat-rejecting film can also be applied across the full windscreen, provided it doesn't reduce VLT below the legal minimum.
