The Definition

Paint Correction in Plain English

Paint correction is the process of removing defects from your car's clear coat using machine polishing. The defects it targets β€” swirl marks, light scratches, haze, oxidation and wash marring β€” are physical imperfections in the surface of the paint that can't be removed by washing, waxing or polishing sprays.

The process works by using a machine polisher and specialised compounds to safely remove a microscopic layer of clear coat, levelling the surface and eliminating the defects in the process. The result is paint that is cleaner, clearer, deeper and significantly more reflective than before.

Paint correction doesn't add anything to your paint. It removes what's damaging it. The gloss you see after correction is the paint itself restored to the condition it was always capable of, without the defects obscuring it.

What It Fixes

What Paint Correction Can and Can't Do

Paint correction works within the clear coat. Understanding what it can and can't address will help you set realistic expectations:

  • βœ“ Swirl marks β€” circular fine scratches from washing, drying and automatic car washes
  • βœ“ Light to moderate scratches within the clear coat
  • βœ“ Haze and cloudiness in the paint surface
  • βœ“ Oxidation β€” dullness caused by UV degradation over time
  • βœ“ Wash marring β€” fine surface marks from poor washing technique
  • βœ“ Water spot etching β€” mineral deposits that have bonded to the clear coat
  • βœ“ Holograms β€” circular marks left by previous poor polishing attempts
  • βœ• Deep scratches through the clear coat into the base coat β€” these require touch-up or respray
  • βœ• Stone chips β€” physical impact damage to the paint film
  • βœ• Rust or paint lifting β€” structural paint damage

How to Tell If Your Paint Has Defects

The easiest test is sunlight. Take your car outside on a bright day and look at the paint under direct sun at a low angle. If you can see circular patterns, a general haze or lack of sharp reflection, those are swirl marks and defects in the clear coat.

On darker and metallic paints these are most visible. White and silver paints hide defects better but they're still there. The difference correction makes on a dark car in sunlight is dramatic β€” night and day compared to before.

The Process

How Paint Correction Works Step by Step

  • 01
    Paint Thickness Measurement
Before any machine work begins, we measure the clear coat depth across the vehicle. This tells us how much correction is safely possible and guides the process throughout.
  • 02
    Wash and Decontamination
A thorough wash followed by chemical and physical decontamination, removing iron fallout, bonded contamination and surface debris before any polishing begins. Correction should never start on contaminated paint.
  • 03
    Defect Assessment Under Studio Lighting
We assess the paint condition panel by panel under proper studio lighting. This is how professionals identify what needs correcting β€” defects invisible in normal light become clearly visible under the right conditions.
  • 04
    Machine Polishing
Using a dual action or rotary machine polisher with appropriate compounds and pads, we work systematically across each panel. The compound level and technique are adjusted based on paint hardness and defect severity.
  • 05
    Refining Stages (Multi-Stage)
For multi-stage correction, a follow-up refining stage removes any haze or micro-marring left by the cutting stage and enhances clarity and gloss further.
  • 06
    Final Inspection and Protection
The corrected paint is inspected under studio lighting and a protective finish is applied. If a ceramic coating is being added, the surface is panel-wiped and prepped for coating application.

Which Level Do You Need?

Single Stage vs Multi-Stage Correction

Single Stage
Single Stage Correction
60–70% defect reduction
  • β†’ One machine polish stage with heavy cut compound
  • β†’ Addresses swirl marks, light scratches and haze
  • β†’ Significant gloss and clarity improvement
  • β†’ Suited to vehicles in moderate condition
  • β†’ Typically completed in one day
Multi-Stage
Multi-Stage Correction
80–90% defect reduction
  • β†’ Cut stage followed by refining stage/s
  • β†’ Addresses deeper defects, haze and oxidation
  • β†’ Near show-level finish with deep gloss
  • β†’ Suited to heavily swirled or neglected paint
  • β†’ Takes two or more days

We assess every vehicle individually and recommend the level of correction that your paint actually needs β€” not the most expensive option. If a single stage will deliver the result you're after, that's what we'll recommend.
